The Science(s) of Creating A Workout
Before a coach writes a single exercise, they need a foundation in how the body moves and why.
- Biomechanics and Exercise Science : how forces act on the body, how joints and levers work, and how to move efficiently and safely
- Anatomy and Physiology : the structure of muscles, bones, joints, and connective tissue, and how they function together under load
This is the baseline. Every squat, hinge, push, and pull has biomechanical and anatomical implications. A good coach sees those implications in real time.
The Science(s) of Creating A Workout for an Individual or Specific Group
A workout isn’t one-size-fits-all. Designing for a specific person means understanding what’s going on inside that person’s body.
- Endocrinology : how hormones like cortisol, testosterone, estrogen, and insulin respond to training, stress, sleep, and age
- Immunology : how training volume and recovery affect immune function, and how to avoid pushing clients into a hole
- Gerontology and Pediatric Exercise Science : how aging bodies and developing bodies respond differently to training stress, and what’s appropriate at each life stage
- Pathology : understanding common conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and osteoporosis, and how they change the equation
- Post-Rehab and Corrective Movement : working with injury history, surgical history, and movement dysfunction to build programs that are safe and effective
- Pharmacology : understanding how common medications affect heart rate, blood pressure, energy, and recovery
This is where individualization actually lives. Two clients with the same goal can need completely different programs.
The Science(s) of Creating an Effective Training Program
There’s a big difference between a workout and a program. A program is a plan over time, and building one requires its own set of disciplines.
- Periodization Theory : structuring training cycles to drive adaptation, manage fatigue, and peak performance at the right time
- Motor Learning and Neuroscience : how the nervous system acquires movement skills, and how coaching cues, repetition, and progression support that process
- Energy System Physiology : understanding the ATP-CP, glycolytic, and oxidative energy systems and how to train each one appropriately
- Behavioral Science and Statistics : understanding what the research actually says, and applying behavioral principles to help clients follow through over the long haul
The Science(s) of Recovering from Training
Training is a stimulus. Recovery is where adaptation actually happens. Coaches have to understand both sides of that equation.
- Nutrition and Fueling : macronutrients, meal timing, and fueling strategies that support performance and recovery
- Chemistry and Biochemistry : how the body breaks down and rebuilds tissue at the cellular level, and what drives that process
- Sleep Science : how sleep drives hormonal recovery, neural consolidation, and physical repair. Without it, the rest of the work is compromised.
The Science(s) of Coaching
Knowing the science isn’t enough. Delivering it in a way that actually works for a human being is its own discipline.
- Sport Psychology and Behavioral Science : mindset, motivation, confidence, arousal regulation, and the mental side of performance and adherence
- Developmental Psychology : how age, life experience, and personal history shape the way clients learn, respond to feedback, and show up to training
The best coaches are as skilled in the human side of this as they are in the physical side.
The Science of Putting It All Together = Art
Here’s the thing none of the textbooks will tell you: mastering all of these sciences doesn’t automatically make you a great coach. What makes a great coach is the ability to weave all of this together in real time, for a real person seamlessly.
And that is our Art
And it’s why the best coaches never stop learning, and never stop caring about the people in front of them.
